Worksted vs ServiceM8

ServiceM8 charges for the work. We charge for the people. Which one is cheaper depends on the shape of your business, so here is the maths rather than the pitch.

Costed on ServiceM8 Premium — the plan whose 500 jobs a month is a realistic ceiling for a crew of twenty — costing them on the free tier would not be a comparison anyone believes.

ServiceM8’s prices include GST and ours do not, so the ex-GST figures beside each plan are the honest comparison. On that basis a large crew doing a modest number of jobs will pay ServiceM8 less than it pays us — that is what unlimited users on a job-credit plan means, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The trade is which number moves: their bill tracks how much work you take on, ours tracks how many people you put on it.

Where the difference comes from.

Price is the first thing you see and the least interesting thing on this page. These are the parts that are built differently.

The same app on Android as on iPhone

One field app, built once, on both platforms — the same schedule, the same job card, the same camera-first capture, the same offline queue. Nobody on your crew is on a cut-down version because of the phone in their pocket, and you are not buying handsets to suit the software.

Signed-off hours, straight into payroll

Field staff clock on and hand the week in from the phone. If you want a check before those hours bill a client or reach payroll, turn sign-off on and the week waits for an approver; if you do not, it clears on hand-in. Either way the approved hours export as a payroll file.

The money side is strict by design

Tax Invoice, ABN, GST on its own line, BSB and account — assembled at issue and frozen. Quote and invoice lines snapshot your price book when they are raised, so a rate rise never rewrites what you already sent, and a numbered invoice is cancelled rather than deleted.

Invoicing & getting paid

Costs land on the job while the crew is still there

A receipt photographed at the trade counter is read by AI, matched to the job and reconciled into the cost ledger against the hours and the materials — so per-job and per-client margin is a number you look up, not one you assemble at the end of the month.

Job costing & margins

Line by line.

A dash means the capability was not listed on the ServiceM8 pages we read on 29 July 2026 — not that it cannot be done. Every claim in the ServiceM8 column is numbered to the page it came from, below.

Who ServiceM8 suits

ServiceM8 is very good at what it is for, and for a whole shape of business it is the better buy. If your crew is large, your job count is steady and modest, and everyone is already on an iPhone, the arithmetic favours it.

  • Unlimited users on every paid plan — ServiceM8 says outright that it does not charge per user, so adding people costs nothing.1

  • A genuinely free plan for a solo operator: 30 jobs a month at no cost.1

  • Card payments are built in, at 1.85% + 30c falling to 1.49% + 30c on the dearer plans.1

  • A Form Store with over 250 pre-made forms, so common industry paperwork is bought rather than built.1

What we read, and when.

Work out which axis you are on.

If your bill should move with your crew rather than your job count — and you want the hours, the costs and the sign-offs in the same record as the invoice — put fourteen days of real work through it.
